Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement state initial examinations indicate the substance was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its source; authorities are currently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to unravel the case" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking official commented the vandalism made him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
