The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
