Right-leaning responses to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Administration Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Release
However, a segment of conservative pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted after the release, especially when compared with the loud calls for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that contained little previously unseen information.
