'Sweet game'
Mary Prior KC, handling the case, described the criminal behavior to the court.
She stated his targets were under-privileged children who were attending a summer program which he ran.
The defendant played a "sweet game" with the minors, the prosecutor explained, in which he would enter the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to ingest treats "rapidly".
She informed the proceedings the man had played this game with the children "over an extended period", and children had earlier experienced illness the subsequent day.
She stated the defendant had been able to explain this repeatedly as the minors being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had worries in recently.
The prosecutor added: "This year his stepson had concerns about the situation, for good reason.
"They resolved" to have a look in the individual's items."
Mrs Prior KC said objects including infant oil, ointment and syringes were located, and his family member contacted the authorities about his suspicions.
She said the man continued to play the "sweet game" with six children that night - July 26th - and they were all sick the subsequent day.
"Authorities" had not arrived by that stage," she stated further.
The police watchdog, the investigative body, had stated that it was reviewing Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.
Mrs Prior explained the children were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so the family member called the law enforcement again.
She explained Ruben then played the "candy game" in a area of five youngsters.
