RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
