Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show draws close, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
