The musician gives twenty-five thousand pounds award winnings to independent live spaces

The artist holding the award in Newcastle
Sam Fender won the prestigious award in October in his hometown

The star has donated the complete sum of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to preserve the Britain's small live music spots.

He was presented with the cheque on mid-October as his third album People Watching was named the outstanding release of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the essential function small stages had in his early career.

"I would not have achieved this success if it weren't for all the performances I performed around the area, and beyond, when I was starting out," stated Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these locations have permanently closed – approximately 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Recently, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which benefits smaller concert halls.

He also took part, generating over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to support numerous local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds supported venues that were dealing with potential shutdown due to challenges arising from water damage, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and noise complaints.

Some locations received financial assistance in improving infrastructure and gear that helped performers and audiences.

"The idea that funds from shows in major spaces backs the smaller venues, where it all starts for performers like me, is just common sense," the star has said.

They are one of the many acts who contributed their honor prize money to good causes

He is far from the only musician to contribute his Mercury Prize prize money to worthy causes.

Back when the band earned the award in the year 1996 for their record Different Class, vocalist Cocker declared that the act would contribute their cash to the non-profit War Child.

During 2002, musician Ms Dynamite split her bounty between a few charities, such as the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also gave a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they required updated gear," she shared with a publication.

Previously, the band gave their funds to the community center that developed their band, alongside other independent music bodies.

And winners that year the group gave their award to a charity for MS after a friend was diagnosed the illness.

"The victory was quite enough," remarked vocalist Heather Small. "The money was the bonus but we could do without the bonus, because we had the honor. So our success affected another person's life."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust announced it had protected a couple of small stages in south-east England, by placing them under local control.

The first in that area and the other in the city were bought under the public acquisition program, which is backed by a national body and music fans who buy "ownership units" in the venues.
