Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
